On Oct. 20, University of Kentucky officials formally dedicated the new Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building, but the state-of-the-art facility has already begun making an impact on students and faculty since it opened this August.   The Jacobs Science Building (JSB) is the epicenter of the university’s scientific community, offering 21st century science education with 21st century laboratories and instrumentation. (April 15, 2016) — A STEM-focused teaching enhancement workshop and scholarly forum will allow faculty members across the University of Kentucky campus to network, develop collaborations and augment STEM teaching skills. The workshop and forum will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Hilary J. Boone Center.

The event will focus on course-based undergraduate research experiences to engage undergraduate students in authentic research and maintain their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) majors.

(Sept. 9, 2015) — With a new era in student living well underway on the University of Kentucky campus, so too is a new era of learning. This is an era that fosters learning beyond the classroom — in residence halls, during a community service project, on a field trip, and even in a campus courtyard — and recognizes that success not only comes from good grades, but from connecting with a network of peers.

This semester, two new communities in the UK Living Learning Program (LLP), LEXengaged and STEMCats, moved onto campus, joining 17 other LLP communities. More than 2,200 UK students live and learn in these communities.

(August 21, 2016) - The University of Kentucky and the College of Arts & Sciences is proud to welcome new students and members of the many Living Learning Programs offered for freshman. On Saturday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 19, UK staff and student volunteers helped freshman in the STEMCats, Greenhouse, Wired, and LEXengaged LLP's unload their cars and move in to their dorms. Along with the LLP students, FastTrack and FOCUS students were also welcomed to campus.

By Laura Dawahare   (July 22, 2015) -- Although the term didn’t surface until the 1980s, the concept of biomarkers has been around for almost a century. Today, doctors routinely test blood for signs of anemia or the antigen associated with prostate cancer. Urine samples can hint at the presence of infection or diabetes, and EEGs diagnose electrical abnormalities in the brain.   But scientists are now advancing the concept, looking for ways to identify a host of diseases early in the process to provide opportunity for early intervention and improve the chances that treatment will be effective.   This is particularly true for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), where evidence points to the fact that the disease process begins long before someone has clinical symptoms, and the ramifications of the disease – both financial and emotional – are disastrous.   At the University of K

(June 12, 2015) — The drive for miniaturization of devices is clear, as each new version of the iPhone, cameras, GPS systems, computers and so on becomes smaller and more powerful. Such miniaturization is possible thanks to advances in the microelectronics industry, yet this field could be revolutionized by moving from the micro to the “nano” scale by finding a way to use nanoparticles — particles between 1 and 100 nanometers in size.

To put that in perspective, consider that a nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter and approximately 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

(May 4, 2015) — In the fall of 2014, a group of 235 incoming students became the first class of STEMCats at the University of Kentucky. This week, they are not only wrapping up their first year at UK, but also a semester of original research; an unusual experience for many college freshmen.

The STEMCats living learning program, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and directed by UK Department of Biology Chair Vincent Cassone, was launched to increase retention of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) majors at UK.

(Dec. 19, 2014) – The first two years of doctoral study in science and technology fields are critical to student success — particularly for underrepresented populations.

Reflecting the University of Kentucky's growing leadership in ensuring more diversity in graduate studies, President Eli Capilouto Friday announced that the university's Department of Mathematics, within the College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a $559,626 National Science Foundation grant to fund the new Graduate Scholars in Mathematics program. (June 3, 2014) — The University of Kentucky has been awarded a $1.9 million grant to improve retention of students in the STEM disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics, through a collection of initiatives dubbed "STEMCats."

UK is one of 37 research institutions selected by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to receive an award, from among 170 institutions competing for a share of $60 million in total funding. The five-year awards, ranging from $1.2 to $2.4 million, are intended to enable schools to focus on "significant and sustained improvement in retaining students" in the STEM disciplines.
